ABSTRACT
Abortion and spontaneous miscarriage may both be experienced as profoundly distressing events, even though physically they may cause little upheaval if the pregnancy ends at an early stage. For young fit people, pregnancy may be the first occasion when medical attention is sought; the first experience, apart from childhood ailments, of being a patient and perhaps a first contact with hospital.
