ABSTRACT
This book studies the impact of party competition on the differentiation of social rights between different groups of citizens. Before the next chapters track the policy development in Italy and Germany, this chapter discusses how the differentiation of social rights can be analysed in the field of unemployment benefits. Moreover, the chapter provides an overview of how the segmentation of unemployment benefit systems varies across advanced welfare states today.
