ABSTRACT
Between the end of the Second World War and the 1970s Italy and Germany established widely different systems of unemployment benefits, although up to the Second World War these policies had been relatively similar in both states. In this chapter I will first summarize the policy developments up to 1945, which reveal many similarities. I will then show how unemployment compensation diverged from that common starting point.
