ABSTRACT

Public examinations offer one method of formal assessment. The subject of PE, once seen as purely a physical activity to act as a release for pupils from the ‘academic’ subjects on the school curriculum, can now be formally examined through all stages in education – from GCSE to degree level. It is for this reason that you need to recognise how schools have developed examination courses and your potential role in the teaching of examination work in PE. This chapter discusses the rapid growth in the development of examinations in PE over the last two decades, the range of examinations available and the implications of this for teachers of PE.
