ABSTRACT
The folktale repertoire contains a number of variations on the possibilities of revenants, of mortals who have some reason or another to re-cross the normally inexorable boundaries between the living and the dead. A few have been sporadically recognised or discussed in relation to their ancient occurrences, but this has remained the exception rather than the rule. It is useful to gather some of the most obviously recurrent types together under a single heading.
