ABSTRACT
There have been several recent major changes in the initial preparation of newly qualified teachers in the United Kingdom:
• The establishing of the Teacher Training Agency, a government quango. • An increase in the amount of time that student teachers spend in schools. • Moves to reduce the role of institutions of higher education. • A move to competence-based planning and assessment of student
teachers.1 • An increasing role of schools in developing partnerships with institutions
of higher education and taking shared responsibility for the preparation of newly qualified teachers.2
