ABSTRACT

Check the syllabus that you are following to see whether knowledge of both parametric

and non-parametric tests is required.

Tests of statistical inference

In Section Nine there are details of descriptive statistics such as the mean, median, range,

and so on. As the name of such statistics implies, these only describe data. They do not

enable you to draw any firm conclusions as to the likelihood that your results are due to

chance, or whether the chance element is sufficiently low to enable you to reject your null

hypothesis. To be able to draw these kind of conclusions, you need to use what you

probably think of as ‘proper’ statistics (you may use a less polite word)—things with

strange names like Spearman’s rho and chi-square.
