Health psychologists are interested in the study of health for both individuals and whole populations. As we saw in the previous chapter, changing patterns of health over time and place have allowed researchers to study trends that may inform them about the particular pattern of disease or illness. This may be useful in terms of designing interventions which may, for example, arrest speciÞc diseases before they have a chance to have a dramatic effect on a population. Further, in well-planned health economies, we may prevent the initial onset of a disease by, for example, immunising an entire population or those considered most at risk (e.g. inßuenza injections for the young and elderly).
