ABSTRACT
In the mid-1980s, to general surprise, the Government decreed that all schools ‘must provide daily collective worship for all pupils . . .’1 (the emphasis on ‘all’ is in the original from which I am quoting.) The worship should be wholly or mainly Christian in nature although schools were permitted to apply for exemption from this requirement if their pupils came from a predominantly non-Christian background.
