ABSTRACT

If it is agreed that education should involve only morally acceptable ways

of teaching, then most people will immediately conclude that it should not

involve indoctrination. ‘Indoctrination’ is a term pregnant with emotive

meaning, and, for most people, it is a condemnatory term. But what is its

descriptive meaning? If prima facie it seems that teachers ought not to indoctrinate, it becomes rather important for them to know what

indoctrinating is. An analysis of what it is to indoctrinate may also help to

explain why it is generally regarded as an objectionable practice.
