ABSTRACT
The settlement of disputes in an institutionalised and peaceful way, so as to inhibit further dissension, and only another way of securing order: this definition of ‘law’, put forward by A. Watson in The Nature of Law (Edinburgh, 1977), does not mean that we have to deny the Romans’ concern for justice and equity (see 61, 66, 189); but that concern is superfluous to this chapter.
