ABSTRACT

Agreed: there is no remedying the brutality of the Roman underlings; still, it is not all the Romans who are ill-treating you, and not Caesar either, and it is against them that you are starting a war. It is not on their instructions that a man comes from them who is a criminal; from where they are in the west they can’t keep an eye on their men in the far east; it isn’t easy over there even to hear the news from here with any speed. (353) It is preposterous to make war on vast numbers because of a single man, and to do it for a flimsy reason when they are so powerful, especially when they don’t even know what our grievance is!
