ABSTRACT
Transportation systems have been a powerful force in determining the form and character of development throughout history. New cities and towns have grown up around transportation routes; changing technologies have led to major shifts in community designs and densities. This role has been especially powerful in the past 150 years, when railways, streetcars, and then the automobile helped decentralize cities and revolutionize everyday life within them.
