ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at ways in which we can account for images in all their complexity, range and difference. It attempts to ask more explicitly what we understand an image to be (which as we will find is no simple thing). This chapter, then, and the one that follows, provide conceptual, theoretical and historical consideration of the image. In this case, the focus is on understanding the image according to a wider system, ecology and family of images.
