Morphemes that vary in form

Phonologically conditioned alternations are easy to understand and describe; we can call one allomorph the basic one and show that the other allomorph is derived from it. In other instances there is no good reason for deriving either allomorph from the other. Instead we can establish an abstract form from which both are derived. Such abstract forms are considered in Section 12.3.
