LOOKING AHEAD Essentially all the sounds that we hear are the result of vibrations in the air around us. In Section 2.1 we first consider some of the physical characteristics of such vibrations: why sounds differ in loudness and in pitch or tone, and how secondary vibration, resonance, is important.
