LOOKING AHEAD Describing the vowel phonemes of English is more difficult than describing the consonant phonemes because the various dialects of the language have somewhat different vowels. (We use the word vowel as a cover term to include monophthong, diphthong, or triphthong). In Section 5.1 these variations are described as differences of inventory, incidence, and pronunciation.
