ABSTRACT

This chapter is less like the previous ones and will be minimally involved in explaining the organization of preferred meanings in specific news items. Although examples will enter by way of illustration, the discussion of this particular storytype will have as its emphasis a gathering together and a putting in place of certain patterns and pre-occupations that seem to be emerging from our investigation so far. A preliminary overview of the ‘other news’ will be attempted, but in the specific context of a grouping of stories whose major thematic concern is ritual, tradition and the past.
