ABSTRACT

For two decades, sustainable development has been a major focus of international policy development and discourse. Although coined earlier, this term was given political legitimacy and popular currency in the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED 1987). Since then, it has become the subject of a massive literature, which encompasses numerous interpretations of the concept and its policy implications and a vast array of strategies for action for cross-sectoral action at all levels. More documentation is being added all the time and the literature on sustainable development in its entirety now possibly lies beyond any single, comprehensive review.
