ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, we defined sustainability appraisal as a generic process to integrate the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainable development that is, or can be, undertaken through, or as an integral part of, a broad range of policy, planning and impact assessment processes — whether applied formally or informally. Our view is that a plural, whole-of-public-policy approach is needed to inform all actions and decisions in support of sustainable development, rather than relying solely on a single impact assessment regime to accomplish this.
