ABSTRACT
In Chapter 2 we discussed that kind of variety in English which correlates with distance, whether physical or social, between individuals, and which is usually called ‘dialect’. We turn now to a different kind of variety; that which we find from one situation to another in the English of one individual. This kind of personal variation we shall call ‘style’.
