ABSTRACT

Slowly but surely computer applications are being produced which allow geographers to handle spatial data on the screen. This chapter examines:

• Storing and displaying spatial images • Computer atlases • Do-it-yourself computer maps • Using mapping software • Computer Aided Design and AutoCAD • MapInfo

In this chapter we move from generic to specific applications. No technique is 100 per cent geographical, and spatial techniques are not the exclusive property of geographers, but there is a group of map handling techniques that are entirely appropriate here. The criterion is that they should be geographical in the sense that they deal with spatial patterns and relationships, and are designed particularly to deal with questions that geographers tend to ask.
