ABSTRACT
In1979,Kohutpublishedapaperdescribingtwoanalyseshehad conductedwiththesamepatientbutfromtwodifferenttheoretical perspectives.Thefirstanalysis,conductedwithintheframeofdrivedefensetheory,occurredbeforeKohuthaddevelopedhishypotheses abouttheself.Thepatient,Mr.Z,returnedfiveyearslaterforfurther treatmentandthesecondanalysiswasinformedbyKohut'snew theories.Theanalyses,eachlastingfourandahalfyearsandeach conductedatafrequencyoffivesessionsaweek,gaveKohutthe opportunitytocomparethetheoreticalperspectivesinaclinicalsetting.
