ABSTRACT
The chapter offers a wide survey of the problem of class in the nineteenth century. Its main focus is the nature of the nineteenth-century proletariat, its culture and its relations with the manufacturing class, but it also considers some of the issues which we have been looking at throughout this book, such as the problem of the ‘individual’ and class.
