ABSTRACT

As outlined in Chapter 2, the essential links between all forms of counselling relationships are the core skills which underpin any effective communication model. Those using counselling skills in careers advisory, nursing or bereavement work share these core skills, whether this means therapeutic counselling or information provision, in a contracted series of sessions or within an hour or during a brief discussion. The skills are fundamental in establishing the essential trust in the relationship, clarifying issues of importance to the client and beginning to work on these issues to a point where the client can take continued action independently.
