ABSTRACT
Francis Haverfield defined the character of the frontier between civilisation and barbarism in the Roman Empire as a topic of relevance to contemporary society. He also discussed a connected topic – the progress of barbarians to a state of civilisation under the influence of the Romans. In this chapter I shall study works by a range of Victorian and early twentieth-century authors, including Haverfield, who wrote about these topics.
