ABSTRACT

Within popular discourse one may identify the ‘Law of Compensation, which postulates an inverse relationship between mind and muscle, between athletic and intellectual development’ (Cashmore 1998: 87). Unsurprisingly, many bodybuilders are critical of this argument, claiming there is instead a proportionate relationship between mind and muscle. Bodybuilding success, it is argued, presupposes knowledge. This claim is thoroughly grounded in the lived realities of their enterprise.
