ABSTRACT
A key respondent mentioned the importance of finance specifically in relation to bodybuilding drugs. This facet of bodybuildingcanproveexpensive dependingupon types of drugs used, frequency of use, duration, dosage and source. For example, research recently conducted among South Wales bodybuilders provides the approximate black market price of drug regimens administered by new and veteran steroid users, and a typical twelve week pre-contest protocol. These being £40, £140 and £370 respectively (Evans 1997: 56). However, as noted by a former competition bodybuilder, other costs are incurred:
Stan: It’s avery expensive sport. ’Cause you’re always feeding yourself and you become a big expense. I’m so expensive as a person because I have to keep myself in such a shape [...] I used to spend £400 a month just on bodybuilding.
