ABSTRACT
In recent years concern about the increase in the number of fires from various causes has been expressed by authorities thoughout the world. In this chapter, I shall attempt to demonstrate this increase from various sources and to make the point that fires caused by arson (see later for legal definition) and fires from other causes (such as deliberate or non-accidental ignition) need to be viewed together in order to obtain an accurate total picture.
