If we wish to understand the power of art, a way to start is by looking at situations in which people claim to feel this power. Here legend, art and history all supply examples of cases in which viewers are moved to awe by pictorial representations. In this originated an ancient and still popular account that links art with imitation, representation or, using a Greek term, mimesis.
