ABSTRACT

Although San Francisco is situated at the western end of the American continent, it has developed into an important regional center since the days of the Gold Rush of 1849. Immigrants from Europe and Asia have entered this port city, and by the beginning of the twentieth century, with its emerging universities, Stanford and University of California, it was well on its way to becoming the major cultural and intellectual center of the West. It was fertile ground for analytical psychology to take root in such a promising environment.
