ABSTRACT

How did Adolf Hitler’s interest in art and architecture relate to the possibility of his being a revolutionary? The question may seem out of place following so closely a discussion of the Second World War – after all society generally views artists in positive ways (Stierlin, 1995, p. 88). They enrich the world with their creations; they pose questions about prevailing realities; and they make available new ways of experiencing that which is familiar. By contrast, so much about Hitler’s life was destructive. But still Hitler had much of the artist about him; even aspects of his war effort were touched by artistic ambitions (see below). The artistic facet of Hitler’s personality must be explored to provide a wider context for his political and military career.
