ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 noted how the East Asian NICs’ economic success has called into question dependency theory, and its argument that Latin American problems result largely from the effects of First World capitalism. Nevertheless, while the dependency perspective may not be equally valid for all developing regions, does it still offer useful insights on Latin America? Have international circumstances here been particularly unfavourable, perhaps more so than in East Asia?
