ABSTRACT

Shantytown women came to develop a feeling of membership in a community of resistance within which there was strong unity and all thought alike. This occurred because they developed ties with other groups, including both informal ties and ties formalized as coordinating committees. These ties were with other economically-oriented groups like the ones discussed in Chapter 4, and with repression-oriented groups and groups focused on women's rights. This chapter introduces the repression-oriented groups very briefly, and then discusses the development of ties and women's coming to feel part of a community of resistance.
