ABSTRACT

Within the course of any human life there are very many different experiences of loss. Some losses such as birth, weaning and death happen to all of us and can be called 'necessary losses' (see chapter 1). Because they all lead to separateness, and are an integral part of development and maturation, they are often also called 'developmental losses'. However, these are only some of the losses we may experience as part of the cycle of life and death.
