ABSTRACT

In the First World War fighting was not limited to Europe. The conflict is known as a world war because it was fought all over the globe and drew so many nations into the conflict, although activity on other fronts, at least in terms of men and resources committed, paled in comparison to that in Europe. Ironically it was the fighting in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia that more nearly approximated what the European commanders had originally anticipated-a war of rapid mobility and sudden changes of fortune.
