ABSTRACT

AT HADRIAN’S DEATH it was the duty of Antoninus to make the immediate arrangements for the remains. As a temporary measure Hadrian was buried quietly at Puteoli above the Bay of Naples, at the villa once owned by Cicero, for the massive mausoleum on the right bank of the Tiber was not yet completed. The ceremony at Puteoli was in private: Hadrian was buried ‘hated by all’.
