ABSTRACT
MARCUS WAS NOW sole ruler, lacking only the name Augustus and the appellation Imperator. He waited, of course, for the senate to confer his powers and names on him, for the formal election as pontifex maximus, and for any other power which he may have lacked. But at the meeting of the senate Marcus refused to be made emperor unless equal powers were conferred simultaneously on his brother Lucius Commodus.
