ABSTRACT
In literate societies the written form of the language is an important and much used form of communication. For many centuries people who could read and write have been able to receive and pass messages across space and through time, enabling knowledge to be transmitted more easily across generations and different populations than if language was just spoken. Although modern technology now enables us to record and send spoken messages to each other, being able to read remains one of the most valuable skills that people learn.
