ABSTRACT

The headteacher has the final say in who works in the different rooms in the school. The extent to which rooms are occupied by class groups dictates whether there is space for specialist work. In an open-plan school there may be spaces planned for work like science but in a classroom-based school it may be difficult to find space for such activities. It is worth looking to see whether there are areas which could be converted. Is there more cloakroom space than really necessary, for example? It is also worth considering whether having rather larger classes and leaving a room empty for specialist work would benefit the school. This is a matter for staff discussion. Much depends on how far the teachers want to work on a specialist basis, but there are problems in doing everything in one classroom.
