ABSTRACT

Management in schools is primarily about managing people. All teachers have to manage children but managing a school means managing adults so that the work gets done. The following management tasks are involved:

Lead and motivate staff Delegate effectively Agree staff salary policy with governors and implement Deal with staff problems Have knowledge of relevant legislation

Margerison (1978) writing about advisory work in industry, lists a number of different kinds of influence:

• Force influence People in senior positions can influence because of their power to make things difficult if other people do not do as they wish. This influence is there whether or not the person influencing wishes to work this way and it is important to take it into account because people may not show their true reactions to those in power. The problem in exercising force influence is that those being influenced in this way may not be convinced of what they are being asked to do and may therefore do it very superficially.
