ABSTRACT

The essence of the 1988 Act was to preserve RE as an entitlement for all pupils and to accord it status as a ‘basic subject’ alongside the National Curriculum. The intention was to ensure ‘that RE has equal standing in relation to the core and other subjects within a school’s curriculum’. This was again affirmed in the Dearing Report (1993). One may wonder whether its delivery in many schools has been faithful to this intention.
