ABSTRACT

In Unit 1 we opened a discussion about the nature and complexities of art. Its meaning and purposes are subject to continuous reinterpretation according to prevailing opinion in any particular period or cultural tradition. Philosophers, poets, historians, cultural observers, critics and not least artists themselves continue to debate the meaning of art, and its relationship to the artist and the spectator. As educators, we need to look at the notion of children’s art in the context of schooling in order to identify a suitable subject knowledge base for teaching art.
