ABSTRACT
Physical abuse, and subsequently sexual abuse, have been identified as happening to children, with recognition that child protection networks are required. The effects upon children of witnessing violence are underestimated. Women who are abused by their partners are frequently expected to retain responsibility for the protection of their children. Children may adapt to adult violence in ways which distort their development and functioning. Concepts of child protection should be extended to child victims of criminal violence between adults.
