Introduction

Conversation consists of spoken language. Not only do the features of_ spoken language differ from the features of written language, but the methods used to analyse conversation have to consider that conversation exists within a social context which determines the purpose of the conversation and shapes its structure and features. Though we are largely unaware of the rules that govern conversation, we operate daily using them.
