ABSTRACT

This unit explores the use of wordless books (books that use pictures to tell a story), fi rst as a stimulus for creating scripted and improvised drama, and then as a cross-curricular resource exploring issues of prejudice and cultural oppression. Wordless books, or ‘graphic novels’, have long been used in the classroom with younger students as an aid to developing literacy, and their use is increasing as an accessible and stimulating resource for students learning English as an additional language.
