ABSTRACT

Although this unit is based around a detailed exploration of a particular nineteenth century crime, it connects with a number of more contemporary concerns. Lizzie Borden, guilty or not, became perhaps the world’s fi rst ‘celebrity criminal’, with newspapers competing to be fi rst with the latest news on the grim events and repercussions of that hot day in the summer of 1892. As such, students will be able to draw comparisons with the role of the media in more recent criminal causes célèbres.
