What Chomsky tried to establish is that theoreticallinguisticsisconcernedwith“knowledgeoflanguage”(aformulationalready presentinthe1965passagereferredtoearlierandlaterin1986usedbyChomsky asabooktitle).Consequently,generativelinguisticshasbeentakenaspartofcognitivelinguistics,claimingthatcognitivelinguisticsandtheoreticallinguisticsare essentially the same (e.g., Bierwisch, 1987). Non-generative linguists, on the other hand,mayarguethateachbirddeservesitsownstone.Knowledgeoflanguageis one thing, but language itself is something else.
