ABSTRACT

In 1921 Freud published his book Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. In terms of Freud’s thinking, it forms the middle of a trio of books, which contain some of his most seminal ideas. In the previous year, he had published Beyond the Pleasure Principle in which he first introduced his theory of the ‘death instinct’: the morbido as opposed to the libido. In 1923 he wrote The Ego and the Id in which he revised his account of the structure of the mind with the division into Id, Ego, and Super-Ego.
