ABSTRACT

Imagine your organization’s leadership asks employees to adopt environmentally sustainable practices as permanent, internally motivated changes in behavior. There are many ways of approaching this challenge, including simply requiring the new behaviors or using an incentive program in which costs are covered by the savings. However, neither mandates nor incentives are likely to achieve your goal of autonomous, long-term change. This chapter describes psychological strategies designed to induce sustainable change, especially because the new behaviors are enjoyable, integral to the self, and/or automatic.
